      Flexible strength Polymer modified asphalt has high tensile values of 3,700 psi to 4,600 psi which makes it flexible enough for a variety of commercial roofing applications. A polymer modified asphalt's flexibility allows for easy installation almost anywhere in the country.      There are several methods of applying polymer modified asphalt to a surface. For large commercial roofs, the membrane may be laid onto the roof deck either directly or through an existing layer of felt paper at each deck/membrane transition. In some cases, it is also possible to place the membrane between roll-formed steel or premanufactured assemblies prior to attaching them to the roof deck. It is recommended that both seams running parallel with structural members (such as purlins) and perpendicular seams should be mechanically fastened every 10 feet using metal fasteners rated for the stresses imposed by traffic above. Mechanical joints can be minimized and the seam can be eliminated by layering membranes during installation.

     Additional information for GAF's Cool Roofing System (CSR) Self-Adhering Underlayment: This product is a versatile underlayment membrane that can be used as an underlayment for all commercial flat roofing applications discussed above in this article. It provides a smooth single-ply surface (mechanically attached/stacked sheet membranes do not have to be removed — which offers contractors a quicker alternative when it comes to maintenance repairs), which can span various types of underlying substrate conditions that should not include any pre-existing seams underneath it due to its full adhesion capabilities; while also offering the strength needed by contractors for use with severe weather hazards, as well as environmentally friendly waterproofing capabilities that will help to extend the life of asphalt shingles or other types of commercial flat roofing products used in its construction.

     Additional information for GAF's Cool Roof Self-Adhering Underlayment (SAU): This product is an asphalt saturated felt that mechanically attaches itself directly to compatible roofing materials, such as EPDM, PVC/Built-Up and Single Ply membranes — while also extending it's waterproof capabilities down into the substrate in order for contractors to operate it underneath a wide variety of applications. One potential downside however is that it must be installed over a previously installed mechanically attached/stacked sheet membrane due to its use with underlying projects; which can make maintenance repairs more difficult needed with cry-out strip commercial flat roofing products.

     Additional information for Owens Corning's DCM: This product is a self-adhering felt that can be used by contractors as an alternative to mechanically attached/stacked sheet membranes. While its primary use for this type of application is EPDM, it has also been known to work well with other types of commercial flat roofing materials, such as PVC Built-Up and Single Ply membranes; while also extending it's waterproof capabilities down into the underlying substrate.
